JMK's Biodiesel

Rudolph Diesel

Rudolph Diesel, creator of the biodiesel engine.

Biodiesel first came from tests of Transesterification of vegetable by scientists E. Duffy and J. Patrick in 1853. Rudolf Diesel then created the prime model of a diesel engine, running its own power in Augsburg, Germany, on August 10, 1893. This model ran only on peanut oil. Dr. Rudolf Diesel designed the engine so it can run on a variety of fuels, such as vegetable oil. Since the fuel is easy to make, the only things that were improved was the filtration and quality of the oil for the engine to run on.

However there are some problems with biodiesel . First of all, biodiesel can oxidize, corroding parts of the machine running on the diesel. If the weather is cold, the diesel can turn into a wax like state, slowing down the fuel filter's plugs. The diesel can also carry water, corroding the system further, however this can be avoided with proper fuel and vehicle development. So far in development, scientists are trying to figure out more suitable crops and improving how much oil will be obtained. As of now, vast amounts of land are needed to completely replace fossil fuel usage.

Biodiesel can not only be used for cars, but many other applications such as motorcycles and airplanes. Many restaurants such as McDonalds have announced they will produce biodiesel from their left over byproducts. This will produce much more biodiesel for the world. Many train companies have also began to use biodiesel to power their trains
